Multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain from Equatorial Guinea detected in Spain.
Abstract
This investigation focused on a specific Multidrug-Resistant (MDR) Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain from Equatorial Guinea that had been imported into Spain. Ten MDR isolates from as many patients from Equatorial Guinea were detected in Spain during 2000 through 2008. All the 10 isolates exhibited an identical genotypic pattern belonging to the Latin-American and Mediterranean (LAM) genotypic lineage of M. tuberculosis designated SIT177-LAM 9. Evidence of clonality was found for all the 10 isolates by different molecular epidemiology methods and mutations involved in drug resistance. The analysis of the RDRio deletion confirmed that the strain belonged to the major RDRio sublineage of the Latin-American and Mediterranean (LAM) genotypic lineage of M. tuberculosis which has disseminated globally.
