Ileocecal Amoeboma: a case diagnosed by pathology and molecular biology

Colonic ameboma is a rare benign inflammatory tumor due to the infection by Entamoeba histolytica and poses frequently the problem of colon cancer. We report a case of a 52-year-old patient who pre-sented a cecal amoeboma revealed by a painful mass in the right iliac fossa. Radiologic and endoscopic examinations depicted a parietal thickening of the right colon and the cecum. A presumptive diagnosis of colon cancer was firstly discussed. Confirmation of ameboma was made on patholo-gical examination, PCR and serology.

L'amoebome colique est une tumeur inflammatoire bénigne faisant suite à l'infection par Entamoeba histolytica. Il pose souvent un problème de diagnostic différentiel avec le cancer colique. Nous rapportons l'observation d'une patiente de 52 ans qui a présenté un cas d'amoebome iléo-caecal révélé par une masse douloureuse de la fosse iliaque droite. Les examens radiologiques et endoscopiques ont montré un épaississement pariétal du colon droit et du caecum. Un cancer colique fût suspecté. Le diagnostic d'amoebome a été porté sur la pièce d'exérèse par l'anatomie pathologique, la PCR et la sérologie.
